The only thing to do in New Orleans (other than drinking) is to eat.

My current recommendations:

bullet

Brigtsens: modern Louisianna cuisine; great duck and other dishes with a Creole influence ($$$$)

bullet

Mother's: down n' dirty po boy shack; go for the debris, the shrimp or Ferdi's special ($)

bullet

Peteunia's: great breakfast if you can deal with the pink walls ($$)

bullet

Felix's Oyster Bar: a cajun coffee shop with an oyster bar ($)

Not as good as they say:

bullet

Commander's Palace:  just too touristy! And pricey. ($$$$)

bullet

Acme Oyster Bar: the oysters are good, but that's it ($$)

bullet

Mulate's: avoid it at all costs. ($$$)

From what I hear (from my resident expert Mike W.):

bullet

Mostra's: Italian with Louisianna flair...out in the Bayou

bullet

Bayonna: top rated by Mike (and by Zagat's)

bullet

Peristyle: The foie gras is legendary

bullet

Nola: even though it is Emeril, the duck is great

bullet

Bistro at Maison de Ville

Great bars:

bullet

Carousel Bar at Hotel Monteleone: for the drink before dinner

bullet

Pat O'Briens: super touristy, but you are a tourist, aren't you?

bullet

The Old Absinthe House: for daytime drinking
