Back Home Up Next

I once said "Boston does not have any good restaurants. "  We took a trip up there to see if I could change my opinion.

The bottom line:  Three out of the four places we ate turned out to be really good.  One place, touted as one of the finest restaurants in Boston, was a total disappointment!  I guess I conclude that there is some hope for Boston yet...

And it seems to be getting better and better up there.  I need to spend more time to try all the spots!

The Great:

bulletB&G Oysters Ltd.: wow...a little oyster bar that serves the best oysters and fried stuff you can get in New England; great lobster roll and a great wine list ($$$)
bulletNo. 9 Park: the best restaurant I have been to in Boston; this place is really good! The food (duck confit, trio of pork, cheese plate, beet salad), the wine list and the service (our waitress, Jenny, was one of the most passionate and knowledgeable servers I have encountered) were all top notch.
bulletThe Beehive: Some of the best comfort food in New England...in an artsy place ($$$)

The Good:

bulletMr. and Mrs. Bartley's Burger Cottage:  one awesome burger, served a variety of ways; great onion rings and lime rickeys! ($)
bulletHamersley's Bistro: classic South End bistro serving a killer mushroom and garlic sandwich and some amazing chicken; everything was good; save room for the profiteroles ($$$$)
bullet

The Bad:

bulletBiba:  Since I have now been here twice, I have no issues ripping the place apart: over-engineered menu; brutal service; waiter couldn't explain anything on the menu (with an average entree price of about $35 you don't want surprises when the food arrives); over-cooked fish; boring salad; too much salt on the appetizer; the worst rendition of the Boston cream pie I have ever had; can't believe it's still in business!  Update:  This place has closed down!!!!

A place I need to try:
