It is IMPOSSIBLE to get a room in San Francisco...unless you don't mind the Marriott Fisherman's Wharf.  Book well in advance and don't settle for the really scary places.

My current favorites:

bullet

Ritz Carlton Half Moon Bay: best location in N. California; make sure to check the swells at Maverick's ($$$$)

bullet

The Clift: Ultra modern interiors, but still comfortable; best hotel bar ($$$$)

bullet

Hotel Palomar: cool boutique with modern furnishings ($$$$)

bullet

The Ritz Carlton: great service, great rooms; tough to beat ($$$$)

bullet

The W San Francisco: I detest the scene, but the rooms are great ($$$$)

bullet

The Prescott: Great rooms, location and service..for less ($$$)

bullet

Hotel Monaco: Pretty funky decor; a lot of fun ($$$)

bullet

Campton Place: Superb luxury; great location ($$$$)

From what I've heard:

bullet

Hotel Rex: Cool, LA-crowd ($$$)

bullet

The Triton: another cool boutique ($$$)

bullet

The Sherman House: want to stay in a Pacific Heights mansion? ($$$$)

bullet

The Sheraton Palace: beautiful lobby, but still a Sheraton ($$$$)

bullet

St Regis
