It is IMPOSSIBLE to get a room in San Francisco...unless you don't mind
the Marriott Fisherman's Wharf. Book well in advance and don't settle for the really
scary places.
My current favorites:
 | Ritz Carlton Half Moon Bay: best location in N.
California; make sure to check the swells at Maverick's ($$$$)
 | The Clift: Ultra modern interiors, but still comfortable; best hotel bar
($$$$)
 | Hotel Palomar: cool boutique with modern furnishings ($$$$)
 | The Ritz Carlton: great service, great rooms; tough to beat ($$$$)
 | The W San Francisco: I detest the scene, but the rooms are great ($$$$)
 | The Prescott: Great rooms, location and service..for less ($$$)
 | Hotel Monaco: Pretty funky decor; a lot of fun ($$$)
 | Campton Place: Superb luxury; great location ($$$$)
From what I've heard:
 | Hotel Rex: Cool, LA-crowd ($$$)
 | The Triton: another cool boutique ($$$)
 | The Sherman House: want to stay in a Pacific Heights mansion? ($$$$)
 | The Sheraton Palace: beautiful lobby, but still a Sheraton ($$$$)
 | St Regis
