You might not believe it, but Philadelphia is home to some pretty awesome restaurants!   They are not afraid to charge quite a bit however.

My favorites:

bulletMorimoto's: I haven't been yet, but I'm sure it is awesome! ($$$$)
bulletKoch's Delicatessen: the best sandwich in the world; wait in line and go for the triple deckers ($)
bulletStriped Bass: great fish, great room...the best in Philly! ($$$$)
bulletDimitri's: I don't even like Greek food, but I love it here; long waits! ($$)
bulletPat's Steaks:  the original South Philly cheesesteak...forget about Gino's ($)
bulletBilly Bobs: A must for the 4 a.m. chicken steak sandwich! ($)
bulletLa Terasse: the great food is over-shadowed by the awesome bar! ($$$)
bulletAbner's: I'm still looking for the best Hoagie...this is pretty good ($)
bulletLe Bec Fin: hard-core stuffy French...and quite good too! ($$$$)
bulletWhite Dog Cafe: my favorite brunch in the city! ($$$)
bulletFork: great classic contemporary new American cuisine (aka fresh) ($$$)

From what I hear:

bulletRouge: Rittenhouse Square bistro
bulletBuddhakan: cool downtown pan-asian
bulletPerrier: bistro by the owner of Le Bec Fin

Old Classics that might still be good:

bulletMagnolia Cafe: the classic cajun dining room ($$$)
bulletWalt's King of Crabs: is it still in business? ($)

I am still crying about the fact they shut down:

bulletCharlie's Water Wheel: Mega-cheesesteaks, perfect pickles and the tastiest little meatballs.  What happened????
