The only thing to do in New Orleans (other than drinking) is to eat.
My current recommendations:
 | Brigtsens: modern Louisianna cuisine; great duck and other dishes with a
Creole influence ($$$$)
 | Mother's: down n' dirty po boy shack; go for the debris, the shrimp or
Ferdi's special ($)
 | Peteunia's: great breakfast if you can deal with the pink walls ($$)
 | Felix's Oyster Bar: a cajun coffee shop with an oyster bar ($)
Not as good as they say:
 | Commander's Palace: just too touristy! And pricey. ($$$$)
 | Acme Oyster Bar: the oysters are good, but that's it ($$)
 | Mulate's: avoid it at all costs. ($$$)
From what I hear (from my resident expert Mike W.):
 | Mostra's: Italian with Louisianna flair...out in the Bayou
 | Bayonna: top rated by Mike (and by Zagat's)
 | Peristyle: The foie gras is legendary
 | Nola: even though it is Emeril, the duck is great
 | Bistro at Maison de Ville
Great bars:
 | Carousel Bar at Hotel Monteleone: for the drink before dinner
 | Pat O'Briens: super touristy, but you are a tourist, aren't you?
 | The Old Absinthe House: for daytime drinking
