London used have the worst restaurants in the world (yes, even worse than Boston), but things have really turned around.  By no means am I an expert, but I had some great meals on recent visits.

The places I liked:

bulletHakkasan: it might just be the best Chinese food in the world; if you can deal with the atmosphere (trendy) and time limits, you will have an insanely great meal ($$$$)
bulletZafferano: who knew there'd be a great neighborhood Italian joint in London; fun place, awesome food, great owner! ($$$$)
bulletChez Bruce:  it is so worth the trip; this tiny restaurant well south of the river was the best meal I have ever had in London ($$$$)
bulletThe Wolseley: great breakfast; great dinner; great little bar with great Manhattans; the Balthazar (circa 1998) of London
bulletPonte de la Tour: A great contemporary British restaurant without too many tourists; great view of Tower Bridge; cool neighborhood ($$$)
bulletOXO Tower: A hip joint with an awesome view and pretty good food; a little pretentious ($$$)
bulletJust about any pub for lunch: you can always rely on the fish n' chips; don't do it without having an ale ($)
bulletIndian food: generally great! ($$)

The places I wanted to go:

bulletGordon Ramsay ($$$$)
bulletBibendum ($$$$)

I don't usually put bars into the restaurant section, but the Mixology at this place was so amazing, you've got to check in out!
